Only Food And Courses Takes Over The Kitchens At The Cheshire Cheese | Latest News

The chef behind the 80s and 90s-inspired popup Only and Courses is about to move into more permanent digs. Robbie Lorraine, who first unveiled his restaurant pop-up at Pop Brixton in 2020, has found his restaurant a fixed residency in Temple. He’ll be taking over the offering at The Cheshire (that’s the one off the Strand, not Ye Olde Cheshire on Fleet Street).

The pub’s been taken over recently by the Blighty Pub Company who are trying to gently lever it into the the 21st century. To that end, they’ve brought in Lorraine to run the kitchen. He’ll be serving up pub snacks and small plates downstairs in the pub, like duck eclairs, lobster doughnuts and smoked short rib hash.

Upstairs is a different matter which is where the chef will run his supperclub from, serving a six-course menu. That will change monthly and include dishes like Smoked salmon and eggs, prawn cocktail and even an After Eights ‘palette cleanser’. It’s the same kind of menu that impressed the Guardian’s critic Jay Rayner who declared of the Pop Brixton pop-up that “for all that whimsy, it deserves to be taken seriously.”

Lorraine says the restaurant will be “modelled on a classic ‘greasy spoon’ cafe, with interiors inspired by 80s and 90s pop culture”.
