New picture reveals fresh evidence in notorious unsolved ‘cheese wire murder’ as family renew appeal

THE family of a taxi driver who was murdered 40 years ago have released new evidence in a bid to find the fiend who killed him, who has been dubbed the ‘Cheesewire Killer’.

George Murdoch, 58, was battered and choked to death in a quiet Aberdeen street in 1983.

He was violently attacked after he turned onto Pitfodels Station Road, on the outskirts of the city on Thursday, September 29 at around 8.35pm.

The slain cabbie’s wife Jessie never got over the horror and died in 2004, while some of George’s closest relatives have also passed away.

But his nephew Alex McKay has shared a photo in a bid to help find more information to catch the notorious killer — so-called because a 16in garotte wire was found at the scene.

In October last year, officers appeared on BBC’s Crimewatch Live to issue an appeal hoping to identify a man who was seen in Wilson’s Sports Bar on Market Street in Aberdeen in September 2015.

They believe the man, who was wearing an Iron Maiden t-shirt, may be able to help the investigation.

And now Alex has released an image believing to be the man in question wearing the t-shirt inside the bar.

The partial-shot shows a part of the man, who is thought to have appeared in the photo by accident.

As well as showing his torso and the t-shirt, the man’s chin and lip are visible in the snapshot alongside his arms.

He is being small, of stocky build, in his 60s or 70s, and likely to be local to Aberdeen.

Alex told BBC News: “Sometimes you go through a little lull and you think goodness me we are not getting anywhere.

“Then something pops up. This photo is an example of that.

“We are absolutely steadfast in our opinion that this is going to be solved.”

Officers are now hoping this could encourage anyone else who may have useful information to come forward.
