Coles Vegemite and Cheese Hot Cross Buns: Aussie delivers brutally honest review

Never mind that we’ve just dispensed with Christmas and it’s only a few days into the new year.

As retailers already prepare for Easter, an Aussie TikToker has delivered a brutal blow to Coles supermarket’s much-anticipated seasonal snack – the Vegemite and cheese hot cross bun.

Food critic Russ.eats took to the social media platform to give an expletive-filled review, describing the Easter treat as “f****** bland” – but suggesting one scenario in which it could be the perfect snack.

Russ begins the video by explaining he doesn’t have “high hopes” for the Aussie-style bun.

“Number one, they just sound f*****,” he said, adding that he thought Bega overused the Vegemite name.

“Ever since they bought the brand back in 2017 they have slapped the name on f****** everything.

“They’re doing what Disney did when they bought Star Wars, they bring out p***-weak products and (put their name on them).

“And in my opinion, it’s kind of de-valuing the Vegemite brand,” Russ said.

Despite the review’s negative start, Russ says he’s keen to try the Easter item, saying it could be the cheaper “equivalent of the cheesy-mite scroll”.

The critic then refers to Coles’ classic cheese and bacon rolls, which he believes are a “delicacy” despite being the cheaper equivalent of the “upper class” Bakers Delight rolls.

But as his caption reads, the everyday cheese and bacon rolls are only a delicacy “when camping”.

“These got me through a f****** Splendour in the Grass, just six of these, about two cans of V and chips on a stick,” he says.

He hopes the new Vegemite and cheese hot cross buns could also be a delicacy.

“I’ve always said we need the Cheesy-mite equivalent and maybe this is it,” he said.
