Cheese-rolling champion goes out at the top as injuries grate

Chris Anderson’s first experience of falling down the near-vertical hill where an annual cheese-rolling race takes place was when he was a teenager after having a few drinks one night.

“I was thrown down there a couple of times when I was drunk,” Anderson, the record-breaking 23-time champion of the Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake event, recalls. “One of our friends did get knocked unconscious, but he was all right. I don’t know if it was him hitting his head or too many beers.”

Anderson, 35, who grew up in the village of Brockworth in Gloucestershire, where the event is held, retired from racing last year after years of hurtling 200 yards down the one-in-two-gradient hill in pursuit of a wheel of 8lb double Gloucester,
