Do any of these wacky and wonderful pizza creations fire up your appetite?
Twitter users from across the US have been revealing how the concept of ‘pizza’ varies wildly from state to state and city to city.
User @MNateShyamalan sparked a flurry of recipe sharing activity after he tweeted: ‘The saddest thing is when you visit a city that’s not New York or Chicago and they’re like @we also have a distinctive pizza style!”’
Other users quickly started sharing photos of what pizzas look like in their localities, with creations from Pennsylvania, Iowa and Rhode Island some of the more unusual pies.

Some users tweeted about the strange pizza creations coming out of Pittsburgh, with the style there consisting of baked, square crusts topped with cold toppings

@thomasadennis revealed, much to his annoyance, how pies in St Louis are typically cut into small squares
Several people posted images of the Altoona-style pizza which hails from Pennsylvania.
Jim Cheney, writing on the website Uncovering PA, notes that this particular style of pizza was invented at the Altoona Hotel in the 1960s or 1970s.
However, when the property burned down in 2013, several restaurants in the area adopted the pizza recipe and started selling it.
Detailing what the pizza recipe entails, he explains: ‘Altoona-style pizza is a Sicilian-style pizza (though they might be offended to hear that). The pizza is cooked on a Sicilian pizza dough, which makes it thicker than many other types of pizza that you’ll find in the area.
‘The pizza is topped with tomato sauce, green bell peppers, peppercorn salami, and, most controversial, yellow American cheese. The yellow American cheese now typically replaces Velvetta cheese, which was the original cheese of choice.’
