The Cheese Hole new cheese shop opens in Bury St Edmunds

Food lovers have been flocking to a brand new store in Suffolk’s foodie capital – Bury St Edmunds – to fill their fridges with fine British and continental cheeses.

We spoke to the owners of The Cheese Hole, on Hatter Street (Fran and Bee Perello) to find out more.

Q: Is this your first foray into retail?

A: Yes, Fran has a background in biology and Bee in early years Montessori.

Q: What prompted the move to open the store?

A: We just both love great cheese and wanted to share that with other people. We chose our location because of its curb appeal, good footfall, and the range of other shops nearby which complement our offering – Vino Gusto for wine, and Wooster’s for bread.

Q: What are some of your favourite cheeses?

A: We will be growing the selection and evolving our range with our customers’ tastes, with seasonal variations, and cheeses we especially think are tasting at their peak.

There’s a stable range of local and regional British cheeses, as well as continental favourites and more more interesting and exceptional varieties we love, such as Chiriboga Blue (a Bavarian cheese made with milk from Holsteain cattle), and Sao Jorge (a Cheddar-style cheese made on a volcanic island in the Azores).

Q: What’s best right now?

A: All cheeses are best bought fresh from your local cheesemonger since they will have come from carefully selected sources, been looked after by our suppliers and ourselves to ensure they are perfect.

Q: What else do you have in store?

A: We are stocking a wide range of accompaniments for cheese, from crackers, to toast for cheese, a fine selection of gluten-free, and other items you might expect to have for a good cheese board such as chutneys and pickles.

Q: Any new plans for 2023?

A: In time we hope to expand to offer cheese wedding towers, charcuterie, gifts, cheeseboards and more. We have lots of idea, but for now we’re honing in on the palates of our…
