Pure diet research finds red meat and cheese aren’t so bad after all

They’ve long been relegated to the ‘sometimes’ category of the , but researchers have found red meat and full-fat dairy could actually promote longevity.

If there’s a diet that encourages us to eat red meat and full-fat , what’s there to complain about? Unless of course, you’re vegetarian or vegan.

If you don’t fall under either of those categories, then you’ll be happy to learn a global study involving around 150,000 people from 20 countries found the healthiest diet includes red meat and whole fats from animals, like your favourite cheeses.

The Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (Pure) study is the first of its kind, and participants were tracked over a 10-year period. As a result, researchers came up with the Pure diet.

These groups were consumed by participants along with vegetables, legumes, fruit and fish. As a result, those who were part of the worldwide study were 30 per cent less likely to die during the research period, compared to those on a poor diet.

What the scientists are getting at, is that previously we’ve been told eating red meat and whole fat can be harmful to our cardiovascular health, when in fact, according to the study’s Dr , consuming the above does the opposite.

Mente told the Telegraph UK his team’s findings “have profound implications for globally”.

“It indicates that the biggest gains in avoiding and deaths globally is expected to occur by increasing the intake of healthy foods to a moderate degree,” he said.

“On this basis, current advice to restrict dairy, especially whole fat dairy, to very low amounts in populations globally is not necessary or appropriate.”
