Newark Advertiser staff take on 2023 with personal challenges throughout January including fitness, veganism and giving up alcohol
As the new year dawns the Advertiser editorial staff are embarking on a series of individual challenges — and it’s all Marta’s fault.
Every week we hold an editorial conference in the Advertiser newsroom to discuss stories for the following week and further ahead.
A few weeks ago the discussion turned to the Christmas editions and the sticky January period when everyone is still recovering from the festive period and, notoriously, very little happens to help fill our pages.
‘Has anyone got any feature ideas?” I asked.
Marta put up her hand and said: “Why don’t we all do a challenge in January? A different challenge for all of us.”
We ignored her.
The following week she made the same suggestion.
We ignored her.
The following week she was more insistent and persuasive and would not let the subject drop until we all signed up.
The result is the following challenges that everyone in the newsroom will attempt to complete throughout the month of January — wish us all luck!
Mindfulness challenge time spend less time on computers and enjoy surroundings throughout January (30301531)
Sharon Hodkin:
Thanks to my job, I spend the vast majority of my days staring at a computer screen or my phone. My challenge, therefore, is a mindfulness one where I will get outdoors more, walking, and enjoying my surroundings.
Dan Churcher:
I’ve decided to go for Dry January. It’s something that I’ve never done before. I like a pint, but it can’t hurt to give the old liver a break and it’ll save me a few quid during the cost-of-living crisis too.
Challenge to give up alcohol throughout January (60582007)
Rob Currell:
For me personally, I wanted a challenge that would be quite challenging for me.
Being the resident sports reporter, I thought it should have some physicality to it.
I plan on doing a push up challenge where I add ten push ups a day to the previous days total.
So the first day I will do ten and by the end of the month, on the final day I would do 310, but to get myself up to 5000…
