While Downtown Willoughby’s annual two-day Rib Burn Off remains the thoroughfare’s primary powerhouse, several seasonal festivals continue to battle for attention, perhaps, none more so, at least when it comes to food, than the yearly Mac N’ Cheese Shuffle.
And according to Downtown Willoughby Bar and Restaurant Association President Brendan Kearney, the gloriously gooey event has grown into yet another fun, family-friendly area staple, celebrating an item, traditionally served as a side, which has evolved into full-blown entrée, increasingly loaded with a range of delectable additions like chicken, steak, and seafood.
“We’ve hosted this event for six years, but this year we’re especially excited to partner with (Berea-based) Working Animals Giving Service 4 Kids 4 Kids as their east side hub,” he said, noting the shuffle signifies the kickoff of DTW’s summer event season. (All proceeds benefit W.A.G.S. 4 Kids.)
“We love it, and it gives us the opportunity to let our chefs and kitchen staff, throughout the district, exercise creativity from their day-to-day menu items and have some fun with one of our favorite comfort foods.”
One such dish was chorizo mac served at The Wild Goose, one of 11 participating restaurants, which also included Ballantine, Barrio, Frank and Tony’s Place, and Sol, to name a few.
By 3 p.m. on April 15, Goose Manager Joe Fiorino was already scooping the specialty fare from a fifth chafer.
“Yeah, we’ve been busy,” he said, smiling, while handing out plastic bowls to eager eaters.
With about 300 people visiting the spots lining Erie Street (and others) to taste and travel — informational passports issued from each eatery were stamped — discounted drinks and retail specials were also offered during the four-hour fête.
“People always discover amazing things down here,” Kearney said. “And everyone who purchased a ticket automatically is entered into a raffle to win a $250 Walk About DTW gift card…
